The number buyers compare is usually the wrong one
When buyers compare aluminium window suppliers, the first number they reach for is usually the glass spec: double-pane, low-E, argon-filled, maybe a reassuringly low U-value. That number matters, but it is not the number the room actually feels.
A finished window is a system, not a sheet of glass in a frame. Heat moves through the center of the IGU, then around the edge, through the spacer, into the frame, and out through any air leakage around the sash. Once those parts are assembled, the performance changes. Two products can share the same glass unit and still behave very differently in a home.
A 1.2 U-value IGU can end up inside a finished window that performs much closer to 2.0 or 2.5 once the frame and edge losses are counted. In a smaller opening, the penalty is worse because the perimeter represents a larger share of the total area. That is why a bathroom awning window and a large fixed panel with the same glass do not deliver the same comfort.
The frame is not a border; it is part of the thermal path.
Why the glass spec can look excellent while the window disappoints
A brochure can make an IGU look stronger than it is in practice because the brochure usually isolates the center of the glass. The middle of the pane is the easiest place for a window to perform well. The weakest points are the perimeter and the moving parts.
That is where whole-window performance changes the conversation. A low-E, argon-filled unit may look identical on two quotes, but one frame can handle the edge better than another. A thermally broken frame, a warm-edge spacer, and a tight sash profile all help keep the rating close to the glass number. A basic frame with an aluminium spacer can drag the real figure far away from it.
The difference is not academic. On a winter morning, the interior edge of the glass is often the first place condensation shows up. If the spacer conducts heat too readily, the perimeter cools faster than the center. The room owner does not complain about the brochure value. The complaint is water on the sill, a colder draft near the window, and a heating system that runs longer than expected.
What actually moves the whole-window number

Picture two rooms with the same low-E, argon-filled double glazing.
Room A uses a thermally broken frame, a warm-edge spacer, and a fixed panel in a large opening. Room B uses the same glass in a narrow sliding window with a basic spacer and a more conductive frame.
Both quotes can list the same glass. Both can even sound premium. Yet Room A will usually feel warmer in winter, less prone to edge condensation, and quieter when the wind picks up. Room B will often lose the advantage at the perimeter and through the sash path.
That is why the exact same IGU can create different outcomes from one house to the next. The mismatch is most obvious in renovations, where buyers compare one sash style against another without noticing that the frame geometry changed the result. It also shows up in smaller openings like bathrooms and laundries, where a single square meter of glass may be surrounded by more frame than a big living-room panel.
For double glazed window supplier quotes, the smartest comparison is not glass type alone. It is the complete tested configuration.
The questions that separate a real comparison from a brochure comparison
A proper quote should answer these questions without hand-waving:
- Is the U-value whole-window or center-of-glass?
- What opening style was tested?
- What is the frame depth and thermal break design?
- Is the spacer warm-edge or aluminium?
- What IGU thickness does the frame actually support?
- What air infiltration figure was tested for the exact configuration?
If a supplier can only provide a best-case glass number, the comparison is incomplete. That does not mean the product is bad. It means the buyer is being asked to judge a window without the parts that define how the window behaves in a room.
A good double glazed window supplier will explain why the number changes when a fixed panel becomes a slider, why a compact bathroom opening tests differently than a large picture window, and why a warm-edge spacer matters more in a cold climate than on a mild one.
Why this matters more than price in practice
The cheapest quote often looks cheap because it has trimmed the parts that are hardest to see on day one. The glass may still be double glazed. The frame may still be aluminium. What changes is the hidden performance at the edge, the sash, and the seal.
That is where the cost shows up later:

- more condensation on cold mornings
- more drafts near windy exposures
- more reliance on blinds and curtains to compensate for comfort loss
The buyers who avoid regret usually do one thing differently: they ask for the whole-window result and compare the complete system, not the headline glass spec. Once that habit is in place, supplier quotes become much easier to interpret, because the noise drops away and the real differences become visible.
The window that performs best is the one whose frame, spacer, sash, and glass were designed to work together.
