The cheapest quote is usually the least complete one

A serious pricing custom aluminum extrusions conversation starts with a simple rule: if two quotes are not built on the same assumptions, they are not comparable. A lower number can come from a lower alloy spec, a looser tolerance, a more optimistic scrap rate, a different freight term, or a tooling charge that will show up later. The number is not the price until all of those variables are normalized.

Across dozens of RFQs, the same pattern shows up. The buyer thinks the market is offering three prices. In reality, the market is offering three different definitions of the job.

Start with the part, not the invoice

A quote for a 6063-T5 architectural profile should not be compared against a quote for a 6061-T6 industrial profile, even if the cross-section looks similar. The same problem appears when one supplier prices mill finish and another prices anodized, or when one assumes export packing while another assumes loose loading.

Before looking at any unit price, force these details to match:

  • alloy and temper
  • profile dimensions and wall thickness
  • tolerance class
  • surface finish
  • secondary operations
  • packaging standard
  • delivery term

If even one of those items differs, the quote is no longer a clean comparison. It is a different product.

Yield is the silent cost most buyers miss

Material cost is usually the biggest line item, but yield is what quietly changes the bill. If a supplier assumes 95 percent yield and another assumes 88 percent, the second quote may look cheap on paper while actually using far more billet to produce the same number of acceptable parts.

A simple example makes the point.

On a 10,000 kg order priced at $3.00 per kg, a 7 percent yield gap means 700 kg of extra material. That is $2,100 before freight, packaging, or finishing. If the profile is complex and scrap climbs further during startup, the gap grows even faster.

That is why the right question is not, What is your piece price? The right question is, How many good parts are included in that piece price?

Tooling is cheap only when it is treated honestly

A $900 die charge spread across 1,000 parts adds $0.90 per part. Spread across 20,000 parts, it adds less than five cents. Tooling is not expensive because the die itself is precious; it is expensive when it is hidden, amortized differently, or tied to an order volume that never gets written down.

The same applies to replacement dies, die maintenance, and sample approvals. If the quote says the tooling is included, ask whether that includes:

  • initial die design
  • first article samples
  • revision after sample approval
  • replacement after normal wear
  • ownership of the die if the relationship ends

A quote that looks simple often depends on one or two of those items being left unstated.

Freight and delivery terms can erase the savings

An EXW price and a DDP price are not competitors. They are different stages of the supply chain. One leaves the factory gate. The other lands at your dock with freight, customs handling, and often a good portion of the risk already absorbed.

For overseas aluminum extrusions, freight can swing enough to wipe out a unit-price advantage, especially on bulky profiles with low density and poor container utilization. Even a small shift in shipping method can matter more than a penny or two per pound in extrusion price.

That is why the delivery term has to be part of the price, not an afterthought. If one supplier quotes from the plant and another quotes delivered, the cheaper number is usually just the less complete number.

The comparison method that exposes the real winner

A disciplined quote comparison checklist forces every bidder to reveal the same assumptions, which is the only way to see the real price gap.

Use this sequence:

  1. Lock the part specification.
  2. Convert every quote to the same alloy, temper, finish, and tolerance.
  3. Separate the price of good parts from scrap and startup loss.
  4. Add tooling, sample, packaging, freight, duty, and payment costs.
  5. Recalculate the result as delivered cost per acceptable part.

That last step is where weak quotes fall apart. A supplier that appears 8 percent cheaper on paper may end up 5 to 12 percent more expensive after scrap, freight, and finish are fully included.

A quote that deserves trust has a narrow shape

A clean quote usually has these traits:

  • the alloy and temper are named explicitly
  • the finish is specific, not generic
  • the tolerance class is written out
  • tooling ownership is clear
  • freight term is stated
  • sample and revision charges are disclosed
  • the assumed yield is visible

If a quote leaves room for interpretation, the final invoice will use that room. The supplier is not necessarily acting badly; the document is simply incomplete.

The cheapest number is not the smartest purchase

The buyer who compares quotes by unit price alone is shopping for the wrong thing. Custom aluminum extrusions are bought correctly only when the quoted number is converted into delivered cost per acceptable part. That single shift in thinking changes everything. It turns the conversation from guesswork into a controlled comparison and removes the biggest source of surprise from the order.

A quote that survives that test is usually the one worth signing.
