Most curved aluminium windows are not curved-glass windows. The aluminium frame is bent to the radius, while the glass stays flat and is cut to the shape of the opening. That single decision is what keeps arches, radius bays, and curved shopfronts within a realistic budget. It is also the reason quotes for curved aluminium windows often look far more manageable than quotes for true curved-glass work.
The distinction sounds minor until it shows up in a specification, a shop drawing, or a replacement order ten years later. Frame curvature is an aluminium problem. Glass curvature is a glass-processing problem. Those are not remotely the same thing.
Flat glass is the rule, not the compromise
In everyday residential and light commercial work, the visible curve comes from the frame line, not the pane itself. An arched head above a doorway, a round-top feature window, or a sweeping bay facade can all be built with flat insulated glass units, even though the outer shape reads as curved from the street.
That works because glass does not need to be physically bent just to follow a curved opening. It only needs to be cut to the right outline and held in a frame that matches the radius. For a semicircular head, the top lite may be a flat segmental pane. For a radius bay, each lite may still be flat, with the mullions and transoms doing the work of tracking the arc.
That approach has three huge advantages:
- The glass can be standard toughened, laminated, low-E, or acoustic IGU stock.
- The thermal and safety performance stays familiar and testable.

The installer may describe the opening as “curved,” but in most cases the actual curved component is the aluminium profile, not the glazing.
Why the frame bends and the pane does not
Aluminium can be formed into a radius with predictable results. Depending on the profile and the tightness of the curve, fabricators can roll-bend, stretch-bend, or mandrel-bend the section while keeping the profile usable for glazing and weather sealing.
Glass is different. To make glass truly curved, it has to be heat-formed or cold-bent under controlled conditions. That pushes the project into specialist manufacturing with narrower tolerances, longer lead times, and a much higher price point.
For most projects, bending the frame instead of the glass is the sensible choice because it preserves the whole window system people actually want:
- clear visibility
- normal low-E performance
- standard safety glass options
- easier air and water sealing
- simpler future maintenance
A curved frame with flat glass is usually not a compromise. It is the engineering solution that lets the design stay elegant without turning the glazing into a bespoke science project.
What changes when the frame carries the curve
Once the curve lives in the frame, the project becomes much easier to control.
The glass can remain in the normal manufacturing stream, which means coatings, interlayers, tint, thickness, and acoustic build-ups can be specified the same way they would be for a straight window. A flat double-glazed unit with toughened or laminated glass can still satisfy energy, safety, and noise targets without any special bending process.
That matters because the performance of the window is usually driven more by the glass makeup than by the fact that the frame is curved. A good low-E IGU in a radius aluminium frame can outperform a poorly specified curved-glass system that cost far more to produce.
It also changes the look of the opening. Flat glass keeps reflections cleaner and more familiar. True curved glass can introduce subtle distortion, especially at shallow viewing angles or when reflective coatings are involved. In a heritage-style arch or a modern radius bay, that distortion is often unnecessary. The eye reads the curve from the frame edge; the pane does not need to bend to make the design legible.
The hidden cost of true curved glass
True curved glazing has a place, but it is expensive for reasons that are easy to underestimate.
When the pane itself is curved, the fabrication chain becomes more complex. The glass has to be formed to a specific radius, the thickness may need to be reduced to achieve that bend safely, and safety compliance often requires lamination. On many projects, that adds a premium of 40 to 100 percent over a flat equivalent.
That premium is not just about the glass furnace. It affects the entire project:
- longer lead times
- tighter dimensional tolerances
- harder quality control
- more difficult replacement if a panel breaks
- fewer suppliers capable of making the exact panel again
A flat insulated unit in a curved aluminium frame avoids most of that pain. The curve is still there architecturally, but the expensive part of the project stays out of the glass shop.
Where curved glass actually earns its keep
There are cases where true curved glazing makes sense, and those cases are usually more architectural than residential.
Think of domed rooflights, large commercial atria, sweeping facades that need a continuous reflective surface, or designs where the glass itself is meant to read as a shell. In those situations, flat panes in a curved frame would look segmented or would not capture the intended visual flow.
That is not the typical arched window in a house, though. Most heritage-style arch heads, curved shopfronts, and radius bay windows do not need glass that bends. They need a frame that follows the geometry accurately and a glazing package that performs well.
A useful rule of thumb is simple: if the curve is being seen primarily in elevation, flat glass in a curved frame is usually enough. If the curve must read as a continuous surface from multiple angles, curved glass starts to become relevant.
The maintenance difference nobody mentions
The choice between flat and curved glazing also affects what happens after installation.
A flat glass unit can usually be replaced by a standard glazing contractor as long as the frame remains intact. If a pane breaks, the replacement process is familiar, and the new unit can match the original performance spec.
A curved glass panel is much more difficult to remake. The radius, the thickness, the safety build-up, and the optical finish all need to match. A broken curved pane is rarely a quick replacement. It is more often a re-order.
That matters in real buildings. Windows are not museum pieces. They get chipped during maintenance, cracked during a storm, or damaged during renovation work. Flat glass inside a curved frame keeps the future repair path realistic.
The practical questions that reveal the truth
The fastest way to separate a sound specification from a vague sales pitch is to ask direct questions:
- Is the glass flat or truly curved?
- Is the curve in the frame, the glass, or both?
- Can the glass be remade by a standard glazing shop if it breaks?
- What is the safety glass makeup at this exact radius?
- Does the quoted price include custom curved glazing, or only bent aluminium profiles?
Those questions matter because the words “curved window” and “curved glass” are not interchangeable. A lot of confusion, and a lot of inflated pricing, comes from treating them as if they mean the same thing.
Why this matters for design, not just budget
The best curved windows are usually the ones where the curve looks effortless. That effect is rarely achieved by making the glass itself complicated. It comes from bending the aluminium accurately, keeping the glazing straightforward, and letting the geometry do the visual work.
That is why curved aluminium windows remain such a practical architectural solution. The design gets the softness and movement of a radius opening without sacrificing the performance, repairability, and cost control that flat glass still delivers best.
