When people first search iron tablets cause insomnia, they usually expect a dramatic answer about iron acting like a stimulant. That is rarely what is happening. In practice, the sleep problem usually starts in the gut: nausea, reflux, cramping, bloating, and the low-grade body stress that makes it hard to settle down.
Iron can absolutely be the reason someone is awake at 2 a.m., but the mechanism is usually mechanical and digestive, not neurological. The tablet irritates the stomach, the stomach pushes back, and bedtime turns that irritation into a full sleep problem.
What Happens After the Tablet Is Swallowed
A standard ferrous sulfate tablet does not dissolve into the body and quietly disappear. It breaks down in the stomach, releases iron ions, and leaves the intestine to absorb only what it can handle. A large portion of the dose may stay unabsorbed long enough to irritate the lining of the gut.
