The question before the cleaner

Anodized aluminum window frames rarely fail because someone did not scrub hard enough. They fail because the first assumption was wrong. A chalky film, a blotchy bronze patch, and a streak left by rain can look alike at a glance, yet they do not live in the same layer of the frame. One sits on top of the finish. On anodized aluminum, that distinction matters because the protective layer is the surface. Unlike paint, it is not a separate skin you can strip off and replace with another coat. Why the wet test matters more than the bottle label

A wet test sounds too simple to be useful, which is exactly why it works. Plain water changes the way light reflects from the frame. Surface dust, salt, and loose chalking often disappear or become much less visible when the frame is wet. Damage inside the oxide layer does not. Pitting, chemical etching, and deeper oxidation still show through because they are not sitting on the surface; they are changing the surface itself.

Use only plain water and a clean cloth. Wet a small section, wait a moment, then look at it in the same light you used before. If the stain fades dramatically while wet and returns when dry, the issue is usually surface contamination. If it stays visible, the finish has likely been compromised.

Three frames that look the same until they are wet

A coastal bedroom window can collect salt residue so thoroughly that it looks chalky white. Wet it and the frame suddenly reads as mostly intact, because the visible problem was sitting on top of the anodized layer.

A bathroom frame can show the same dry chalky appearance, but the source may be mineral scale mixed with moisture-driven oxidation. Wetting it may reduce the contrast but not erase it. That is the middle ground: the surface still needs cleaning, but the finish is under stress.

Why the wrong response causes permanent loss

Most damage to anodized aluminum does not come from a single dramatic mistake. It comes from a series of reasonable-sounding ones.

Vinegar seems harmless until it meets an oxide layer that does not like acidity. Bleach seems powerful until its alkalinity starts dissolving the finish. A scouring pad seems efficient until its grit cuts through a layer that is thinner than a human hair. Even pressure from a hard brush can create a patchy sheen that never blends back in.

That is why diagnosis comes before cleaning. If the finish is intact, a neutral wash is enough. If it is already compromised, harsh products do not restore it; they simply remove what is left. The wrong cleaner on a sound frame wastes finish. The wrong cleaner on a damaged frame accelerates failure.

What to do after the diagnosis

If the wet test says the problem is surface grime, the next step is straightforward. Use a mild, pH-neutral solution, soft microfiber cloths, and light pressure.
