Most damage to aluminium window frames does not come from dirt. It comes from the assumption that all aluminium behaves the same. It is powder coat, anodizing, or untreated mill-finish metal, and each one reacts differently to acids, alkalis, solvents, and abrasion.

Aluminium is a base metal with a personality layered on top

Aluminium itself is reactive enough that it forms a thin oxide film almost immediately when exposed to air. That natural film is part of what makes the metal workable outdoors, but the factory finish above it does most of the visual and protective work. Once that top layer is damaged, cleaning stops being maintenance and starts becoming repair.

The three common finishes behave very differently:

  • Powder-coated frames look like painted metal. A dry resin and pigment layer is baked onto the surface, so colour and protection live in the same coating.
  • Anodized frames have a metallic sheen because the surface has been converted into a thicker oxide layer. It is not paint sitting on top; it is part of the metal.
  • Mill-finish frames are the rawest version. They rely mostly on the natural oxide layer and will show oxidation faster than the other two.

That difference explains why a product that seems harmless on one frame can be destructive on another.

The instinct to scrub harder usually makes the problem worse. Abrasion scratches coatings, and the wrong chemistry does more silent damage than visible grime ever could.

  • Acids can strip or dull the oxide layer and leave etched patches.
  • Strong alkalis attack anodized surfaces and can leave a cloudy, uneven look.
  • Solvents can soften or break down powder coating binders.
  • Abrasive pads may remove the stain, but they also remove the finish.

That is why a standard bathroom cleaner or kitchen degreaser is a gamble. It may clean off fingerprints quickly, yet it can also cut the life of the frame’s protective surface without showing the full damage until much later.

The most common failure pattern is not dramatic. It starts as slight dulling, then streaking, then a surface that holds dirt more readily because the finish has been roughened. Once that happens, every future cleaning becomes harder.

A painted-looking frame is not the same as raw metal

Visual identification takes seconds and prevents the biggest mistakes. Powder-coated aluminium usually looks uniform and opaque, almost like a baked enamel finish. Anodized aluminium tends to show a soft metallic depth, especially in silver, bronze, or black. Mill-finish aluminium looks more industrial and raw, with a plain silver-grey tone.

The rule is simple: if the surface looks painted, treat it like paint. If it looks metallic, treat it like a metal finish that can be chemically altered. If it looks raw, treat it as bare aluminium that needs the gentlest possible maintenance and quicker protection against oxidation.

That quick visual check matters because stains do not change the finish underneath them. A dusty white patch on a powder-coated frame still sits on powder coat. A chalky residue on an older frame may be oxidation, not dirt. Cleaning without identifying the base finish is how people end up using the wrong remedy for the right-looking problem.

A few real-world examples show the risk clearly

A homeowner sees black marks around a balcony door and reaches for a heavy-duty spray labelled safe for kitchen grease. On a powder-coated frame, the product removes the grime but also leaves a hazy patch where the coating has been softened. The next cleaning reveals a slightly rougher surface that attracts dust faster than before.

Another person uses an ammonia-based glass cleaner on anodized frames because it works beautifully on mirrors. The glass shines, but the anodized aluminium loses some of its metallic depth and develops a tired, uneven cast that does not buff out.

A third case is milder but still important: a mill-finish frame near the coast gets wiped only when it looks dirty. Salt and moisture sit on the surface long enough to accelerate oxidation, so the frame develops a dull, chalky film that no amount of casual wiping can reverse.

In each case, the error is the same. The wrong cleaner was chosen before the finish was identified.

The least risky method is not clever. It is repeatable.

Aluminium window frames stay looking good when the cleaner matches the surface, not when the product sounds powerful. Powder coat wants gentle soap. Anodizing wants protection from harsh alkali. Mill-finish wants quick, frequent care before oxidation gets a foothold.

The core lesson is not about finding one miracle cleaner. It is about noticing that the frame itself decides the cleaning method. Once that becomes the habit, most of the common damage — dulling, etching, scratching, and premature oxidation — never gets a chance to start.
