The main reason aluminium double hung windows keep earning a place in Australian homes is not period style. It is the way they move air without depending on wind.

A single opening can bring in fresh air, but it usually does so at one level. A double hung window gives you two openings in the same frame: the upper sash can discharge warm air, and the lower sash can admit cooler air. That vertical split is the whole point. In a closed room, heat, moisture, and stale air stratify. The air nearest the ceiling is often the first to feel oppressive, especially after cooking, showering, or a hot afternoon sun load.

When both sashes are open, the window stops behaving like a gap and starts behaving like a short chimney. Warm air rises out through the top opening because it is less dense. Cooler replacement air comes in below. The cycle continues as long as the room has a heat load and the outside air is cooler or moving. That is stack effect, and it is the reason double hung operation feels more effective than a one-level opening of the same size.

In a typical room with a 2.4-meter ceiling, the top layer can feel noticeably warmer than chest height on a still day. You do not need a lab to notice it; standing in the room is enough. This is where aluminium earns its keep. A stable frame keeps the tracks aligned, so the sash slides cleanly season after season instead of swelling, binding, or rattling out of square.

If opening the upper sash takes effort, the room will default to the easy habit: cracked lower sash, maybe a fan, maybe the air conditioner instead. That is the real reason the format has survived: the physics still make sense.
